Scott C. Gayle has received the Governor Terry Sanford Achievement Award for his efforts in helping to secure the continuation of the Governor’s School of North Carolina for 2012 and beyond.

The service award was presented to Gayle by Jim Hart, President of the Governor’s School Alumni Association, at the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Governor’s School held at Salem College in Winston-Salem on July 14, 2012.

Governor’s School was founded by Governor Terry Sanford in 1963 as a residential summer program for gifted and talented rising high school seniors across the state, and is held annually at Salem College and Meredith College for 600 students concentrating in fields ranging from science and math to music and drama.

Traditional state funding for the Governor’s School was lost in 2011 when the legislature made deep cuts to the state’s education budget on the eve of the school’s 50th year.

As a member of the board and Fundraising Chair of the non-profit North Carolina Governor’s School Foundation, Gayle led a successful seven month campaign that raised over $700,000 from interested corporations, foundations and the school’s 32,000 alumni, which the Foundation donated to the Department of Public Instruction to privately fund both campuses of the Governor’s School for 2012. Gayle also participated in advocacy efforts by the Foundation which resulted in restoration of state funding for the Governor’s School in the 2013 budget on a recurring basis.

Gayle attended Governor’s School in 1968 in math. He has served on the board of the Governor’s School Foundation since 2010.
